Don’t worry - this isn’t some sinister plot. When you mark your ballot, your choice is still a secret...but that’s pretty much the only part of voting that’s a secret.
What most Americans don’t realize is that your voting history (i.e., whether or not you actually vote) is public information. If you’re a perfect voter, politicians know it. And if you’re an awful voter, they know that too (as do your friends and neighbors...if they care to look it up).
And guess what: politicians pay lots of attention to good voters, but they don’t care too much about bad voters.Shocking, I know…but this has huge implications:
-
Politicians only poll people who are likely to vote in their election
-
Politicians only communicate with people who are likely to vote in their election
-
Politicians only prioritize the issues that “likely voters” care about
-
And if you’re not a good voter, then you’re a second-class citizen...and good luck getting politicians to lead on the issues that you care about
And if you care about climate change, this is of supreme importance...because most environmentalists don’t vote.
Yes, seriously.
15.78 million environmentalists don’t vote in midterm elections. 10.1 million didn’t vote in the last Presidential election.
And although this might sound like bad news, it’s actually a tremendous opportunity... because voting is easy, and if we flood the electorate with even a fraction of these new environmental voters, politicians will have no choice but to listen…and to act.
So how do we do it?
-
